Bird Activities for Preschooler

One of the best part about spring is the significant presence of variety of birds flying around and hanging out at the garden. This is the perfect time to let children explore and discover more about birds. Whenever we go for a walk at the neighborhood, my three year old daughter would hear and see different kinds of birds! One time, I spotted a cardinal bird in a low branch, I quickly point it to my daughter so she can witness how beautiful cardinal bird is. It didn’t stay there for long but she did see and hear how the bird sing and hop from branches to branches…….and then flew. I told her, “That bird is really quick! Lets find another one.”

“But if for the physical life it is necessary to have the child expose to the vivifying forces of nature, it is also necessary for his psychical life to place the soul of the child in contact with creation, in order that he may lay up for himself treasure from the directly educating forces of nature.” Dr. Maria Montessori, The Montessori Method

Below you can find ideas of bird activities we have at home for my preschooler child. She had fun matching all the different kinds of birds with the three part cards.

TIP: This type of activity enhances the vocabulary of a young child as early as 2 1/2 years old. Upon presenting this activity and he/she was able to familiarize the name of the birds, you can add more classification of birds in your lesson. You will be amazed how your child quickly distinguishes different names of the birds.
