Practical Life Activity: Seed Preservation

What is Seed Preservation?

Seed preservation is the process of storing seeds for extended period of time while maintaining their viability and genetic integrity. The goal of seed preservation is to ensure that valuable plant genetic resources are available for future generations, and to safeguard against loss of genetic diversity caused by natural disasters, climate change, or human activities.

It is essential to teach children about seed preservation as it instills in them a sense of responsibility and awareness about environmental sustainability. Seed preservation is a great practical life activity that can help children learn about the environment, gardening, and the importance of biodiversity. By preserving seeds, children can help to protect the future of plant species and ensure that they remain available for future generations.

“The cultivation of flowers and trees is the cultivation of the good, the beautiful and the ennobling in man, and for one, I wish to see this culture become universal.”

Benefits of Teaching Kids About Seed Preservation

Fostering an appreciation for the importance of agriculture and the natural environment. Children who understand the importance of preserving seeds and the environment are more likely to adopt eco-friendly practices and become environmentally conscious adults. They will also have a deeper understanding of the impact of their actions on the environment and take steps to minimize their carbon footprint.

Empowers them to become change agents. By learning how to preserve and store seeds, children can help their families and communities to produce their food sustainably. It is a valuable skill that they can use to support themselves and their families, especially in times of food insecurity.

Preserving Biodiversity. Children learn that each plant species has unique characteristics and that preserving seeds is essential in maintaining these differences. This knowledge also instills in them a sense of wonder and curiosity about the natural world, encouraging them to explore and learn more about the plant kingdom.

Developing Scientific Skills. For instance, children can learn about the life cycle of plants, the germination process, and the conditions necessary for seeds to grow. They can also learn about the different methods of seed preservation and storage, including drying, freezing, and storing in airtight containers. These skills can enhance their scientific knowledge and improve their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Cultivating Creativity and Responsibility. Children can explore different ways of preserving and storing seeds, such as creating seed banks, seed libraries, and seed swaps. They can also come up with innovative ideas to promote seed preservation and biodiversity conservation in their communities. By doing so, they will develop their leadership skills and become responsible citizens who care about the environment. By teaching children about seed preservation, we are investing in a better future for our planet and our future generations. Below are the list of methods how to preserve seeds for future use.

Methods For Preserving Seeds

Drying and storing seeds in airtight containers– This is the most common method of seed preservation. Seeds are dried to a low moisture content, then stored in airtight containers such as jars or bags to prevent moisture and air from damaging the seeds.

Cold storage– Some seeds can be stored at low temperatures, such as in a refrigerator or freezer. This method can help preserve the seeds for longer periods of time, but it may require specialized equipment and careful temperature and humidity control.

Seed banks– Seed banks are specialized facilities that store seeds from a variety of plant species. They typically use a combination of drying and cold storage methods, and may also perform regular viability testing to ensure that the seeds remain viable over time.
